May 2006 REAL FOOD, by Nina Planck, (Bloomsbury USA, New York), June 13, 2006. Since the official pub date is still in the future, I haven’t seen a copy of Nina's new book yet, so this is not an official review. However, if you like Sally Fallon’s message, I think you will also appreciate Nina’s. Nina is a champion of raw milk, butter, lard, and all things organic. She comes by this naturally, having been raised on her parent’s organic vegetable farm in Loudon County, Virginia. Here's what Nina has to say about the inspiration behind her book: I was raised on real food—raw milk, butter, chicken liver, meatloaf, eggs for breakfast, and, of course, tons of vegetables, every day—and then I went off to try vegan, vegetarian, low-fat, low-saturated fat, and low-cholesterol diets. The result? I was fat and grumpy and had many other complaints. When I started to eat real food again, I lost weight and felt great. But I was curious: was eating butter going to give me a heart attack? I started to do some homework on real food. Traditional foods aren’t the problem; industrial foods are. COOKING WITH LARD, David Boyd, Mike Smith and Mike Steed, (Longstreet Press, Atlanta) 1996. I can't believe I didn't catch this book when it came out. Humor runs amok in this 100-page book written by some good ol' Southern boys reminiscing about their mother's lard creations and the woes of tasteless, i.e., lard-less, modern-day food. I got my copy on Amazon.com for under $10 with shipping, but since it's out of print, I see copies on sale for a lot more. This is a fun book with great ideas for using your stock of lard--and well worth it if you want a good laugh and can afford the high price tag. |
